The Commons Dining Hall and Hawk’s Nest

Hartford, Connecticut

Beacon Architectural Associates completed a 20,000 sf renovation with a 750 sf addition to the food service and dining space located in the University Commons building at the University of Hartford. This project updated this important gathering spot on campus through converting a dark, 70s-era cafeteria into a light-filled, contemporary, all-you-care-to-enjoy restaurant style dining hall with exhibition cooking stations offering a wide array of menu options freshly prepared in an open kitchen environment. The design created a more inviting and comfortable atmosphere featuring sleek, stainless steel food stations, state-of-the-art kitchen equipment, a wall of  floor-to-ceiling windows, modern finishes, custom lighting fixtures, private dining spaces and various seating types. A new entry improves access and visibility, and highlights the importance of this campus destination.

On the lower level of the Commons, the Hawk’s Nest sports pub also enjoys a fresher, more modern look with a glazed storefront addition, new carpeting and seating, neutral walls, and a new gas fireplace tucked in the corner.

Together, these changes enhanced students’ dining experience with greater flexibility, better value, and more variety.
