University of Massachusetts - W.E.B. DuBois Library

Amherst, Massachusetts

Beacon Architectural Associates assisted the library director and upper staff in programming and design of the new Learning Commons situated on two lower levels of the 26-story Du Bois Library building on the U Mass Amherst campus. The Beacon design team was tasked with creating a high tech space that would also be flexible and comfortable for the thousands of students who congregate there on a daily basis. The scope included significant HVAC and safety improvements, new infrastructure, and space planning for modular seating and enclosure systems. The design provides for single study carrel desks, enclosed study for 3-4 people, and study rooms for 5-8 learners, and these three components are used in various configurations throughout the Learning Commons.
